Australian medical coding assigns codes to medical data based on ICD-10-AM, a modified version of ICD-10 that includes codes for interventions and standards. ICD-10-AM is different from ICD-10-CM, the U.S. version that has more codes but no intervention or standard codes. ICD-10-AM is used by Australia and some other countries, while ICD-10-CM is only used by the U.S.
At Transorze, we understand the complexities of Australian healthcare coding. With ICD-10-AM’s unique nuances
and ACHI’s comprehensive reach, Transorze provides the tools and support you need to navigate this landscape with confidence.
■ ICD-10-AM is regularly modified to reflect the latest updates of ICD-10 from WHO
■ Based on the MBS, ACHI codes health interventions in Australia. It also covers interventions not in the MBS. It was formerly known as Medicare Benefits Schedule-Extended.
This classification has a tabular list of interventions and an alphabetic index. It groups interventions by body system, site and type.
■ Interventions are grouped by body system, site and type in this classification. It includes interventions not covered by the MBS, such as dental, allied health, cosmetic surgery.
■ The MBS item number is the first five numbers of ACHI codes for interventions that have an MBS equivalent. The last two numbers are a specific intervention extension in that item. ACHI codes have seven numbers in total.
■ ACS are the Australian standards for coding with ICD-10-AM and ACHI. They are used by all public and private hospitals in Australia.
■ ACS are revised regularly to keep up with clinical changes, classification updates and user needs of patient data collections.
